I'll look into that, but I don't think it can be ALL the problem,
since the card comes up in a wacko state.  I.e., if you look at my
first iwconfig outputs, which I captured right after boot-up, it's
clear that something's going wrong and the card is not accepting the
initial iwconfig commands in the /etc/rc.local file.
