Hi and many thanks to all who have replied.  My question has been answered and understood.  Unfortunately I did not do enough preparatory work before I left for NZ.  Setting up a remote desktop if the remote machine is not logged in has presented another layer of obstacles but thankfully I have ssh working and a Tailscale subnet so I am working on options.
