Cannot play downloads from get_iplayer!

Paul,

You say pvr plays .ts

Then: "The sound is fine (I combine the
video, audio and subtitle files using MKVMerge), but there is no video
at all."

Doesn't that result in a .mkv?

Have you tried:
1. rename .mkv to .mp4 - sometimes works
2. running .mkv through ffmpeg to change to .mp4
