I ran whereis ffmpeg

so I added the path to my prefs

michael1 at Bonds:~> get_iplayer --prefs-add --ffmpeg /usr/bin/ffmpeg 
/usr/share/ffmpeg /usr/share/man/man1/ffmpeg.1.gz

But conversion still failed
