Well, I didn't expect that! Thanks for all the responses, useful and not so useful. The answer wasn't a change of OS or hardware. I uninstalled and re-installed and hey presto it works. I think it was almost certainly a user account permission or path problem - that can happen on any multi-user OS, as my near-50 years of computer experience will confirm. Don
