Hello Steve; please refrain from seeking GiP support
via personal e-mails; I suspect this was done inadvertently
and since there's isn't any delicate personal info therein,
I am forwarding your e-mail to the list, where, hopefully,
some member(s) with RasperryPi expertise can advise
you further :-)

Please inform the list (by e-mailing to get_iplayer at lists.infradead.org)
as to the exact flavour of your Raspbian OS (Jessie, Wheezy, Stretch etc),
and the version of FFmpeg installed.
BTW, the latest officially released and supported version
of GiP is 2.97 (2.98 is well cooking currently..), you appear
to have 2.96 installed.

This does not look OK, either...
Windows here, but even with GiP 2.96, there are not four dashstd radiomodes:

perl get_iplayer-296w.pl --type=radio --pid=b016c8yc -i | FindStr modes =>

modes: original:
dashhigh1,dashhigh2,dashstd1,dashstd2,dashmed1,dashmed
2,dashlow1,dashlow2,flashaacstd1,flashaacstd2,flashaaclow1,flashaaclow2,hafhigh1
,hafhigh2,hafstd1,hafstd2,hafmed1,hafmed2,haflow1,haflow2

Your terminal output suggests that the actual download
itself succeeds, but it's during the remux to the final .m4a
file that things turn sour:

> open3: fork failed: Cannot allocate memory at /usr/bin/get_iplayer296

This memory allocation issue could be perl or ffmpeg related,
but this is all murky waters for me :-{ ; someone else with the
required knowledge has to step in...
(A Pi reboot wouldn't hurt, I guess...)

Festive regards,
Vangelis.
