Yes, David runs the list. However, he should respect the preferences of 
list members who as you say "almost no-one else on the list agrees with him 
in principle".

Hence my suggestion of a poll to see what members would like.

If David does not agree with the majority view and can not accept their 
preference he could (should?) give ownership of the list to Dinky or anyone 
else who would like to run the list to reflect members' preferences.

I'm a group owner and a mod on several Automotive, IT and Freecycle-type 
lists and would be happy to be owner/admin/mod here too.

Regarding David's statement that if he is not cc'd with a question/problem 
he won't finds that rude and won't reply. Again he is in a minority (of 
1?). If I am PMd on any list for an answer, unless it is a personal 
question, my reply goes back to list together with request than PMer 
replies to list next time so we can all share questions and solutions.

David, what do you do on forums? Only reply to those who PM you?
