One completely different approach is to use an rtmp downloading
tool that is not based on rtmpdump or librtmp.
One free such tool is "FreeRapid Downloader" (FRD):

http://wordrider.net/freerapid/download.html#mirrors

This is written in Java (min version JRE 6) and instead of
rtmpdump it uses an "rtmp.frp" plugin; bbciplayer VOD
content is handled by a separate bbc.frp plugin (latest version
is 1.1.7) - by default, this fetches the highest available quality
for a stream, you can still choose lower qualities from within
this plugin's options. Sadly, live streams can't be dumped.

With latest version 0.9u3, installed Java 7u51 on a Win32 OS
and the latest versions of needed plugins, the opening ceremony
in HD (use this URL in FRD
http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b03tvhy0/ )
downloaded all in one go (in about 1h15min from my
location, over wi-fi) producing a perfectly playable 4.02 GiB
.flv file (identical to the one dinky saved with his modded rtmpdump).

I then proceeded to remux the flv file to an .mp4(v2) one using a
combination of FLVExtractCL (CLI version of FLVExtract) and
MP4Box (see attached batch file - extension changed to .txt;
to use change it back to .bat), and ended up with this:

 {I prefer MP4Box remuxing (-brand mp42) to the FFmpeg one,
because the mp4(v2) files MP4Box produces are more compact
than the mp4(v1) FFmpeg yields.}

 Yes, I KNOW this post may have little to do with get_iplayer,
but I thought it'd be useful for some to share this nice and simple
tool for the once-every-2-years case a > 4.0 GiB file needs to be
recorded in one chunk...
