Yep - different symptom of the same underlying issue.  The 
not-so-obvious thing is that --whitespace really means "allow whitespace 
AND punctuation".  It's the latter that wreaks havoc, thus the need for 
--fatfilename on Windows to strip the punctuation allowed by --whitespace.
