I have ended up with the whole of 6 hours worth squished in to a 2gb
file, is there anything I can do to get a higher quality version? It's
worse than YouTube 240p. Do I need to wait for a HD copy or is this
the best there is and nothing else is likely to happen to improve it
now?

I've done that for a long time and the only problems stemmed from Apple's fiddling with Xcode. get_iplayer itself will soon join the Homebrew universe, FWIW.
