I'd guess that the change of the swf a few months ago was the culprit.
If you recall it was making downloads fail randomly depending on the
direction of the wind and the CDN used. You will also need to delete
the .swfinfo file if you patch get_iplayer for a proper fix.

David W, Is there anything I can do or help with to get a 2.79 release
done from current git master? I think this will remove some of the
repeated issues we keep getting on this list. I think we have about 5+
threads all stemming from the same problem over the past few months.
