As you've obviously guessed, John's Gmail account has been compromised.
(don't click the link if you haven't already, it's a referral-tracking link
for viagra spam).

This happened to me a while ago (and I'm paranoid about security) so it's
possibly a dodgy app or third party site compromise. Unfortunate, but there
we have it - John please change your password then change it again :-) then
go find out who else you have to apologise to from your outbox... ;-)
