It would be useful if you could give a more detailed report :) This is
one of those tipb with an M3 chip ? (r128). I can probably access one of
these and run some tests, I haven't given much attention to X r128
driver lately I must admit.

On r128 on ppc, it's generally necessary to have UseFBDev in X config
and eventually put a modeline there based on the output of fbset -x (the
kernel has a hard coded list of modes for various machine models as
those older laptops don't have DDC).
