I lodged this as a bug in bugzilla here and I have some basic test rpm packages available from my system. Although this is entered and assigned in bugzilla, i'd like to know how this code works, so that I can possibly compare notes with Bastien Nocera when a fix is made on his end. The latest are the time of writing are the *2wm rpms, whenever I need a fix, a newer version will appear. Install the new RPM, reboot -- it should have added itself to yaboot.conf all by itself. Yabootconfig doesn't add the initrd, and booting without an initrd causes the observed symptom (at least it did for me, if I remember correctly). Since I guess yabootconfig has overwritten your old yaboot.conf, the easiest solution would probably be getting your system bootable again somehow and then removing and re-installing the new kernel. Assuming that yabootconfig got everything else correctly, you should only have to add the initrd. It may be possible to specify it at the yaboot prompt. Or boot from a rescue CD (don't know whether you can get a shell with boot.iso?). -Christian From res8wxbx at verizon.net Fri Feb 4 11:33:16 2005 From: res8wxbx at verizon.net (res8wxbx@verizon.net) Date: Fri Feb 4 11:33:21 2005 Subject: help needed for mozilla plugins Message-ID: <20050204163316.PPGH4572.pop001.verizon.net@pop001pub.verizon.net> I'm having trouble getting helix recognized as a plug-in within mozilla/firefox. Not exactly relishing the thought of cvsup, although cm3 does seem to have a PPC port, so I may switch to using that for both i386 and ppc. Downloadable at ftp://peach.ipv6.infradead.org/pub/RPMS.extras for now, IPv6-only as the name implies, until I stick them somewhere with better bandwidth. Major failure mode so far has been random use of i386 inline assembly. A bunch of packages failed due to files present in the buildroot which aren't packaged, and clamav seems to want dietlibc. Any suggestions for how best to automate the Extras/ppc builds in future would be welcomed. -- dwmw2 From arekm at pld-linux.org Fri Feb 4 14:19:08 2005 From: arekm at pld-linux.org (Arkadiusz Miskiewicz) Date: Fri Feb 4 14:19:17 2005 Subject: kernel update, how? I followed these instructions here - http://www.bytebot.net/geekdocs/ibook/fc2ppc.html I have the iso burned, and get the yaboot prompt. When I type "mac", or "mac text", or "mac noprobe", it starts to install, I see some linux output, but then quickly the video display output dies on me, and I need to reboot. All I set up were 2 partitions, splitting the 30g harddrive in two. The first partition is the Mac, the second is meant for linux. I see references to using mac-fdisk, but can't get to a point in the install where I have that opportunity. It's a linux-based utility, right? I don't see how I can create a bootstrap partition either, I've read that I should be doing that as well. I have no interest in running Mac OS X, to be honest, got the laptop because its real tiny, not crazy expensive, and can support running Fedora. Any/all advice is appreciated, sincerely. Thanks. The background: This is my machine - iBook Mac OS X Version 10.3.5 1.2 GHz PowerPC G4 This is my linux image - /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.9-1.667 This is where I got my iso from - http://fedora.linux.duke.edu/fedorappc/FC-3/isos/ I was able to boot into linux, and did some configs to my yaboot.conf to enable dual booting: parted gave me this info: hda3 - macosx hda6 - bootloader hda5 - swap hda2 - the full ext3 file system So, I ran these commands: yabootconfig -r /dev/hda4 -b /dev/hda6 /sbin/ybin -v I also edited the /etc/yaboot.conf file and added: macosx=/dev/hda3 enablecdboot Ok, so after that, I'm able to boot into MacOSX fine, sweet. However, I rebooted and tried to start linux.. Unfortunately, no luck, I'm getting the following error: EXT2-fs warning (device hda2): ext2_fill_super: mounting ext3 filesystem as ext2 VFS: Mounted root (ext2 filesystem) readonly. Warning: unable to open an initial console. Then, a bunch of security/SELinux output, and it hangs. Any help someone can provide is greatly appreciated, thanks much. I know Paul did an install on his iMac and was successful So, I did one today on the iBook G3. X detection from anaconda wasn't appropriate (first time this has happened, incidentally); relevant bugzilla filed (radeon 7500 not being configured well). Autopartitioning is still something that needs to be fixed. Manual disk druid partitioning works There is an /etc/yaboot.conf with the appropriate initrd line available. However, the drive isn't blessed (so running /sbin/mkofboot, and then saying Y will allow you to get fedora booting - in the instructions, this is stated to be /sbin/yabootconfig ...) X, for the Radeon 7500 actually comes up, using fbdev, at 640x480. Its ugly :P rhgb works. SELinux brought up a system that was rather weird - ping, scp, traceroute wouldn't work (error while loading shared libraries: cannot restore segment prot after reloc: Permission denied). Bringing it up with selinux=0 solved that for me quickly. APM is still installed by default. Why is apmd.spec showing: ExclusiveArch: %{ix86} ppc Do we really want apmd running on PPC? I've sent the anaconda patch which creates the 64-bit boot.iso to Jeremy, so hopefully we'll see images/mac64/boot.iso in rawhide some time soon, too. The 32-bit installation should work the same as FC3 does, using images/mac/boot.iso. One day we ought to put them both on the same CD image -- it wouldn't be very hard to do so. Ideally, we could even make CD 1 bootable. I still don't like the fact that kudzu can declare that there are no network devices present even when the module is loaded and the device is clearly shown in /proc/net/dev. Making it know about the BMAC feels like a workaround rather than a fix -- kudzu _ought_ to be able to fall back to just noticing that it's already supported. -- dwmw2 -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... Message-ID: <1108757855.19262.705.camel@hades.cambridge.redhat.com> The attached patch makes it try to create a bootstrap partition, and makes it refrain from trying (and failing) to use LVM. The bit in partitions.py to make isBootable() true on the bootstrap partition doesn't seem to work, which is why the bootstrap partition still isn't first. Dunno why. If you hack it to set numDrives=-1 for Apple Bootstrap even when it's not bootable, you still end up with the bootstrap after the rootfs. Again, I don't know why. If you delete all old partitions, it doesn't realise that partition #1 on a Mac is actually the partition table itself, so it's going to get confused when it tries to create another partition #1. We possibly want to fix doClearPartAction() to leave the partition table (partition 1) alone. If you tell it to delete only Linux partitions, it doesn't recognise your original bootstrap partition as such, so it creates another. That wants fixing too. I've just done some playing with rawhide installs, and I think it's well worth including it for FC4T1 -- we can always drop it later if we really have to, not that I think that'll be necessary. It's only really the installer which was in question -- the distro itself has been fairly solid on PPC since at least FC2, if you could get it to install. Anaconda in rawhide is now capable of installing the bootloader correctly and rendering the system bootable -- unlike in FC3. That was the biggest problem in the past. Remaining issues (see tracker BZ #121179): - Rawhide lacks a 64-bit boot.iso for the Mac G5. That's fixed with the patch in BZ #149081. - Autopartitioning doesn't work well. That's partially fixed with the patch in BZ #121266, but there's a few more relatively minor issues which could do with being fixed by someone who understands anaconda, or at least speaks python. The problem is definitely tractable though. - A few X configuration problems. These should also be relatively easy. There's an Xautoconfig package from Yellow Dog which gets it right, and it's just a case of getting system-config-display and/or anaconda to learn the same tricks. -- dwmw2 From byte at aeon.com.my Fri Feb 18 12:30:25 2005 From: byte at aeon.com.my (Colin Charles) Date: Fri Feb 18 23:42:48 2005 Subject: The new powerbook's mouse Message-ID: <1108747826.5753.105.camel@localhost.localdomain> Well, for the record, we don't support it yet, but here's some information about it: http://www.ragingmenace.com/index.html That's the new powerbook mouse issues being tracked there mostly... -- Colin Charles, byte@aeon.com.my http://www.bytebot.net/ "First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win." -- Mohandas Gandhi From dwmw2 at infradead.org Sat Feb 19 09:23:00 2005 From: dwmw2 at infradead.org (David Woodhouse) Date: Sat Feb 19 09:28:27 2005 Subject: Autopartitioning. It seems that people are working very hard on it - the new livna tree is a VERY good sign, and what was listed as blockers a few weeks ago - a lot of it seems to have been dealt with (just from reading the list) My main reason for wanting it is because I run Fedora Core on x86 and it would be nice to just run the same thing everywhere - like back in the days when RH 6.x/7.x and YDL 1.x/2.x allowed me to basically do so. So I'm hoping that if not by fc4t1, that we'll have something by fc4t2 or t3. -- Michael A. I'm going to take a gamble and just try one when a FC test (or final) is released - AT&T Plug&share (the 54g model) works just swell in x86 fedora, I'll try that one first I suppose - I can steal it from my PC probably long enough to see if it works before buying another. It'll also let me test the rpm.livna.org bugzilla rpm in PPC FC. Would anyone have suggestions for wireless 802.11g not necessarily based on Atheros if that doesn't work? The machine is a 450 MHz G4. I don't want to go 802.11b, and where the machine is going (the kitchen) I can't go straight cat5, a wireless bridge I suppose would be an option - but I'd rather not do that (I'd have bought a slot CRT iMac if I wanted to do that) I would of course prefer Atheros because that's what my desktop and laptop use, and I know madwifi works well - even if it does taint. -- Michael A. I use FC3 PPC on my Mac Mini every day, for production use. The install was A Little Weird, but that's about it. OSX refuses to work with my iPod, wants me to waste space duplicating every song on it in a local library, and has a crappy OpenOffice. I find FC3 with Firefox, Thunderbird, GTKPod, Nautilus CD Burner, the sexy FC3 OpenOffice, etc. much more pleasant. I've gone through Colin's steps to install FC3 on my G5 and came across these issues. FYI, I did an "Everything" install. 1. yabootconfig does not seem to translate the "--initrd" option into the /etc/yaboot.conf file. I specified yabootconfig -r /dev/hda9 -b /dev/hda12 --kernel boot/vmlinuz-* --initrd boot/initrd-* but my /etc/yaboot.conf file did not list an "initrd=/boot/initrd-*" option. Workaround: edit /etc/yaboot.conf and issue ybin command. 2. "Everything" install installs both the ppc64 kernel and the ppc32 kernel. Workaround: delete ppc32 kernels. 3. I had to turn off kudzu. Kudzu was doing something for about 10 mins before I finally gave up and CTRL-ALT-DEL'd the machine. The system did not hang or oops.... I haven't bothered to investigate any further. Workaround: enter "Interactive" setup, skip Kudzu. At system prompt, chkconfig kudzu off. Reboot. 4. I had to turn off cups Ditto. Workaround: enter "Interactive" setup, skip cups. At system prompt, chkconfig cups off. Reboot. In the end, I have a great FC3 system :) P. If it looks like a PPC-specific problem, post to the PPC list. If not, post to fedora-test-list. If not, take a guess (or cross-post) and I'm sure someone will guide you. Use some initiative. > and later for fedora core 4 ? > in fedora-ppc@lists.infradead.org ? > fedora-ppc-list@redhat.com (does not exist) > please, not fedora-list@redhat.com Again, if it's PPC-specific then it can't hurt to start on the PPC list. If not, do whatever you'd do normally with arch-independent bugs. Either way, you should probably be filing bugs in bugzilla rather than relying on mailing lists. You would also do well to join #fedora-ppc on irc.freenode.net if it's just advice and assistance you're after rather than a channel for reporting bugs. >it would be nice if these things are clear and announced for test1. >?? >http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/core/test/3.90/ ??
